HubSpot’s Dan Zarrella talks about DMOZ
Yesterday I wrote a blog article suggesting that HubSpot’s Website Grader no longer gives any weight to a website that is listed in the DMOZ directory.
HubSpot’s Dan Zarrella responded to my article with the following:
“I work at HubSpot as the product owner responsible for changes like this to website grader. The reason we took dmoz out is because for most people, the open directory has become very difficult to get into. Largely because of inactivity and corruption. Thanks for following WSG closely enough to notice this!”
In my humble opinion, no one should give any credence to being listed in the DMOZ directory.
The DMOZ blog offers the following:
“Through a system of self-governance, the DMOZ volunteer editors manage the directory’s growth and development, and through a system of checks-and-balances, ensure the directory is of superior quality.”
Here is a thought for you… just to get a feel for the superior quality of the DMOZ directory, randomly pick 10 of the websites in the directory and see how they perform with the following products:
- HubSpot’s Website Grader
- Web Page Analyzer from Website Optimization
- Google’s Page Speed – requires the Firefox Firebug add-on

We generally agree at HubSpot. While at one time DMOZ was an important signal of a quality and established website, we no longer believe that to be the case. That is why we removed DMOZ as a factor in Website Grader.
