Test WordPress Tweetmeme & Tweetcount Plugins

All of your websites and blogs should utilize something like Tweetmeme or Tweetcount to help increase the presence of your site on the web.

Both of these WordPress plugins provide the same benefit… they drive more traffic to your website and blog by making it easy for your site viewers to tell their friends about your site.

Tweetmeme has existed for several years… while Tweetcount has been around for several months. At this writing, the Tweetmeme WordPress plugin was downloaded 204,652 times… while the Tweetcount WordPress plugin was downloaded 3,950 times… and it should be noted that both of these products are implemented on many blogs and websites that do not utilize the WordPress platform.

I tested both of these plugins on my blog and here is what I found:

  • Both plugins were easy to install
  • Both plugins were easy to uninstall
  • Tweetmeme does not offer the ability to alter the shape and color of the tweet button
  • Tweetcount offers the ability to alter the shape and color of the tweet button
  • Tweetmeme increased the size of one of my blog articles by 3,282 bytes
  • Tweetcount increased the size of one of my blog articles by 1,013 bytes
  • My blog article loaded at least 1 second faster using Tweetmeme than it did using Tweetcount

Wait a minute… did I just say that the Tweetmeme API (Application Programming Interface) increased the size of my blog article by 3,282 bytes… while the Tweetcount API only increased the size of my blog article by 1,013 bytes?… shouldn’t it take more time to load the Tweetmeme API since it is 2,200 bytes larger than the Tweetcount API?

Conventional wisdom says that the larger the file, the longer it should take to load… well, that is not what my testing showed… Tweetmeme clearly performed better than Tweetcount. I can only conclude that, regardless of size, the Tweetmeme API runs more efficiently than the Tweetcount API… and as a result, I have installed Tweetmeme on this blog.

I rarely install a plugin that significantly increases the page size on my blog… however, I will do so if I think it is important enough… and driving more traffic to my website and blog is important to me.
