When will IE6 just go away?
As a website designer I would really like to see Internet Explorer Version 6 disappear from the planet. I’m tired of having to write special html code so that my web pages display properly for IE6 viewers.
The problem for website designers is that 10 to 20 percent of browser users still use IE6 as their browser of choice… and that is too large of a number for website designers to ignore. It is difficult to obtain precise data for the number of IE6 users… however, I looked at the following sources to arrive at the 10-to-20 percent number of IE6 users:
Microsoft sure isn’t helping with the demise of IE6. While the monthly browser usage statistics show a steady decline in the number of IE6 users, Microsoft will continue IE6 support until at least 2014… ugh!!
Is Microsoft afraid that IE6 users might switch to a different browser instead of upgrading to IE7 or IE8? Probably not, most computer users don’t realize that other browsers even exist… or if by chance they are aware of other browsers, they don’t understand that a computer can have multiple browsers installed on it.
The push to get rid of IE6 will have to come from Microsoft… and that push will probably have to come from within the Windows monthly security updates. Come on Microsoft… step up and take the lead in getting rid of an antiquated and security prone version of Internet Explorer.
