A photo of the GPS track for our trip to Red Mountain... 7.7 miles roundtrip, gaining ~3600 feet of elevation.
P1040107.jpg
We parked (2333') at the junction of the Salmon La Sac Road and Forest Service Road 46.
P1040115.jpg
We hiked (no snowshoes needed for the road) FS-46 for 1.6 miles to the summer trailhead for Red Mountain.
P1040117.jpg
After hiking FS-46 for 1.6 miles and gaining ~260 feet of elevation we reached the summer trailhead for Red Mountain.
P1040118.jpg
We still didn't need our snowshoes as we followed a nice trench on solid snow.
P1040125.jpg
We crossed FS-117 at 3879 feet and the trench we were following ended... so we put on our snowshoes.
P1040129.jpg
On steep terrain... sinking in more than 6 inches even with our snowshoes on.
P1040132.jpg
Looking north to Mt. Daniel as we gain elevation on Red Mountain.
P1040137.jpg
Looking NE toward Hawkins Mountain and the Stuart Range as we gain elevation toward the Red Mountain summit.
P1040148.jpg
Looking NE to Chikamin Peak on the far left... then the 5 summits of Lemah Mountain, Chimney Rock and the 3 summits of Summit Chief Mountain on the far right.
P1040149.jpg
Looking north at Mt. Hinman on the left... Mt. Daniel in the center... and Cathedral Rock (the pyramid on the right).
P1040153.jpg
Starting to get very windy several hundred feet below the north summit of Red Mountain.
P1040156.jpg
The higher we go, the more wind we find.
P1040164.jpg
Barb leads the way as we continue on the ridge toward the north summit of Red Mountain.
P1040166.jpg
Still gaining elevation on steep terrain.
P1040167.jpg
Will we ever get there?
P1040171.jpg
We can finally see the corniced summit in the center of the photo.
P1040175.jpg
BarbE and Snowdog on the north summit of Red Mountain... we will respect the corniced summit and not go any closer to the actual summit.
P1040182.jpg
Looking NW and north to Hibox Mountain on the far left... then Three Queens... then Chikamin Peak... then the 5 summits of Lemah Mountain... then Chimney Rock... then the three summits of Summit Chief Mountain... then Bears Breast Mountain... then Mt. Hinman and Mt. Dainiel on the right.
P1040185.jpg
From the north summit of Red Mountain we are looking south to the true summit of Red Mountain... 40+ feet higher than where we are standing... now to get back down this mountain before freezing... too windy and cold to take any more photos on this trip.
