Burroughs Mountain - 7.28.2014
Directions from the fee station at the White River entrance of Mt. Rainier National Park up to the Sunrise Visitor Center.

This map shows our trip from the Sunrise Visitor Center to First, Second and Third Burroughs Mountain... ~9 miles roundtrip, gaining ~2800 feet of elevation.

Sunrise Visitor Center... nice to be able to park the car at 6400 feet.
|
Most folks go up to Sourdough Ridge from the visitor center and then out to First Burroughs Mountain... but we decided to follow this utility road that passes by Sunrise Camp on the way to First Burroughs.

From Sunrise Camp we can see the Sourdough Ridge Trail cutting across the rocky slope above.

We have passed by Sunrise Camp below and are heading for the Emmons Overlook on our way up to First Burroughs.

Lots of nice flowers in the area of Sunrise Camp... lupine, paintbrush, mountain bistort, sitka valerian and others.

Still gaining elevation... we can see the trail above... as it cuts across the rocky slope.

We are going to have to cross a short patch of snow on steep terrain.

After crossing the snow patch we made a few careful steps to get back on the trail.

From Second Burroughs we are going to have to give back 400 feet of elevation to get over to Third Burroughs on the far right... but not to worry, we will get to regain the elevation on our return... ugh!
