Garrets Arch and Wonderland of Rocks - 1.18.2017
We hiked a very short distance on the Wall Street Mill Trail and found this 'Y'... it is unsigned... but we will take the left fork... the fork behind Denali Girl goes to the Wall Street Mill.
It is a short hike from the 'Y' in the trail to the Wonderland Ranch.
Entering the south end of the 'Wonderland of Rocks'... a short distance from the Wonderland Ranch.
In a south-north drainage... passing by a shark in the 'Wonderland of Rocks'.
The Astro Domes in the 'Wonderland of Rocks'.
Continuing deeper into the Wonderland of Rocks.
Hiking north in the 'Wonderland of Rocks'.
Passing by the Freak Brothers Dome... popular rock climb.
Shortly after passing by the Freak Brothers Dome we turned to our right (east) and entered a east-west drainage.
Looking back at the Astro Domes as we continue in the east-west drainage.
Denali Girl reads the book to make sure we are on route.
Continuing east in the east-west drainage.
Ah yes... the Red Obelisk... one of the landmarks for this hike.
Bolts on the face of the Red Obelisk.
Denali Girl found a little bivy spot.
Contininuing east in the east-west drainage.
Denali Girl says that Garrets Arch has to be close.
We hiked a short distance beyond the arch... but were able to find it as we backtracked a short distance.
A close up of Garrets Arch... hiding behind the huge boulder on the left that has the huge white scar on it.
We are tracing our steps back to the south-north running wash in the Wonderland of Rocks and looking back here at the huge boulder with the large white scar on the right... that huge boulder blocked our view of Garrets Arch on the way in.
We have returned from the east-west drainage and are back in the south-north drainage again... and will continue north in search of Elephant Arches.
We turned into another east-west canyon (~.5 miles north of the canyon we used to reach Garrets Arch) in search of Elephant Arches.
This drainage gets kind of gnarly really quickly.
Denali Girl had already stopped a ways back... and I was moving at a snail's pace... we were running out of time and had to retreat... as we traced our steps back out of Wonderland of Rocks to our car... leaving Elephant Arches for another day... 6 miles roundtrip, gaining 308 feet of elevation.
