Hillman Peak - 10.14.2024
We drove in the north entrance to Crater Lake National Park... then parked in a paved pull-out along the West Rim Drive on the NW side of Hillman Peak... here we crossed the West Rim Drive from where we parked... with our destination up there on the horizon.
We have joined the Rim Trail and started hiking south on the trail... here looking back across the West Rim Drive to where we parked our car at 7,650 feet elevation. Mount Bailey (left) and Mount Thielsen (right) stand out on the horizon.
We have hiked the Rim Trail from where we parked over to the west side of Hillman Peak on the left... and that is 'The Watchman' over there on the right.
After hiking the Rim Trail for less than a quarter-mile we have left the trail and started hiking up toward the summit of Hillman Peak.
After gaining approximately 200 feet of elevation we have reached the west ridge line of Hillman Peak... and are starting to see Crater Lake.
Denali Girl is on the west ridge-line of Hillman Peak... and we can see where we parked along the West Rim Drive down below... Williams Crater is just on the other side of West Rim Drive.
Denali Girl is coming up in the shade in the lower right corner of the photo... with 'The Watchman' out there in the foreground.
We aren't that far below the summit here... but we need to follow a faint path underneath the north side of the summit to find easier terrain over on the east side of the summit... that is 'Llao Rock' out there on the left.
I'm over on the east side of the summit block... here watching Denali Girl come over to join me from the west side of the summit.
I took this pano from the 8,181 foot summit of Hillman Peak... that is Wizard Island down below... and from here we see just about all of Crater Lake... the deepest lake in the United States... and the eighth deepest lake in the World.
Denali Girl took this photo of me on the 8,181 foot summit of Hillman Peak... the high point around the rim of Crater Lake. Yes, Mount Scott is considerably higher than Hillman Peak, but Mount Scott is not on the rim of the lake.
Denali Girl is working her way over to the Hillman summit.
Almost up to the summit... a person just needs to pay attention to where they are stepping.
We got to enjoy this view for an hour and no one joined us. The odds of seeing anyone here are very slim because there is not an official trail.
Time to leave the summit and head out to the east to find that faint path that will take us back to the west underneath the north side of the summit.
Denali Girl took this photo of me hiking west on that faint path underneath the north side of the summit.
More or less tracing our steps back down from the Hillman summit.
Watching Denali Girl coming down from Hillman Peak.
We are almost back down to the Rim Trail below.
We are getting ready to leave the Rim Trail and cross over the West Rim Drive to where we parked our car... the total hike was one mile, gaining 497 feet of elevation.
