Wonderland of Rocks - 1.15.2025
We parked in the dirt parking lot located a quarter mile NE of the very popular paved parking lot for Barker Dam... and we will start hiking on the Wall Street Mill Trail.
After hiking the Wall Street Mill Trail for less than an eighth of a mile we will leave the trail and turn to the left (north) and head over to the Pink House and the Wonderland of Rocks.
After hiking less than a quarter mile we have reached the 'Pink House'... aka known as the Worth Bagley homestead.
We have gone in the south entrance of the Wonderland of Rocks... and the wash is pretty narrow for at least a half-mile.
Passing by what we call 'Shark Rock'.
Shortly after passing by 'Shark Rock' the wash opens up with excellent views of rock formations.
Continuing to hike north in the Wonderland of Rocks... with the Freak Brothers Dome in the right foreground... this dome has several sport climbing routes.
Continuing to hike north in the Wonderland of Rocks... we refer to the rock formation on the far left as 'The Camel'.
Taking a break on the east side of 'The Camel'.
Now heading NE toward what looks like a massive wall of rock formations.
Exploring the massive wall of rock formations in the previous photo.
Ranger Steve is coming over to join us... with the east side of 'The Camel' in the distance behind him... is that an arch in the bottom of the photo?
Continuing to hike NE... looking back at that interesting rock formation in the middle of the photo... and the South Astro Dome is located behind the rock formation... located at least a half-mile beyond the rock formation in the foreground.
Taking a break.
Ranger Steve coming over to join us as we start to hike south in the Wonderland of Rocks.
Hiking south in the Wonderland of Rocks... looking for a place to start hiking west toward the South Astro Dome.
Looking back at some of the terrain we have negotiated.
Now hiking west... heading toward the South Astro Dome on the horizon.
We have returned to the main wash in the Wonderland of Rocks and are tracing our steps back to the car.
We have returned to the 'Pink House'... leaving an eighth of a mile to get back to the car... the total hike was 3.4 miles, gaining 148 feet of elevation.
