Tumalo Mountain - 4.18.2025
I parked at the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park in the Deschutes National Park... across the highway from Mount Bachelor.
Looking across the Cascade Lakes Highway at Mount Bachelor as I start snowshoeing up Tumalo Mountain.
The first few hundred feet of elevation gain are pretty much in trees.
After gaining 500 feet of elevation I'm starting to get views looking back at Mount Bachelor.
I parked at 6,300 feet of elevation... and at 7,100 feet of elevation I got a view of South Sister to the northwest.
Continuing to gain elevation with South Sister (left) and Broken Top to the NW.
Broader views with every step... with South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top on the horizon.
My first good look at Tumalo Mountain... and I'm still 400 feet of elevation below the summit.
Looking back at Mount Bachelor as I continue to gain elevation... pretty much out of the trees at 7,400 feet.
Still gaining elevation with every step... Mount Bachelor on the far left... with South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top on the right.
200 feet of elevation gain will get me up to the summit area.
I have reached the summit area where there is room for several football fields.
On the Tumalo Mountain summit area... here looking south.
On the Tumalo Mountain summit area... here looking north... with 10 more feet of elevation gain leading to the true summit.
This pano was taken from the 7,775 foot summit of Tumalo Mountain... I gained 1,435 feet of elevation in 1.4 miles.
A closer look at South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top from the summit of Tumalo Mountain... with part of Tam McArthur Rim on the far right horizon.
Leaving the Tumalo summit area and more or less tracing my steps back down to the car... Mount Bachelor on the left... with Sparks Lake the flat snow area in the middle of the photo.
Working my way down from the Tumalo summit... with the Bachelor parking lot visible on the far right.
About half way down from the summit and getting back into the treed area.
Back at the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park... the total snowshoe hike was 2.9 miles, gaining a total of 1,455 feet of elevation... with 99 percent of the elevation gain done on the way up to the summit.
