Alabama Hills - 3.18.2026
From the town of Lone Pine, California we drove 2.7 miles on the Whitney Portal Road... then turned right onto Movie Road and drove it for one mile... then parked in a turn out. On the horizon above our bikes is Mt. Whitney... and at 14,505 feet it is the highest point in the Continental United States.
We are hiking east from where we parked and looking back to the west at the snow covered Sierra Nevada Mountains. Movie Road is running left-to-right through the middle of the photo. Parts of more than 400 movies have been filmed in the Alabama Hills.
Hiking east where we found this arch... and while this might not really be an arch we did find several large arches when we hiked here two years ago.
Hiking east toward our target in the middle of the photo... with the Inyo Mountains on the horizon.
Looking back to the west as we continue hiking east. Mt. Whitney is blocked by the huge pile of rocks and boulders in the distance beyond Denali Girl.
A hole in this rock with part of the Inyo Mountains in the distance on the other side of the hole.
Continuing to hike east... with the Inyo Mountains on the left horizon... and a very small piece of the Siera Nevada Mountains on the extreme far right horizon.
Looking back to the west. That massive pile of brown rocks and boulders is still blocking our view of Mt. Whitney.
Denali Girl took this photo of me hiking east... and we aren't really following a trail.
Looking back to the west as we continue to hike east.
Mallow flowers... also saw some Indian Paintbrush, Phacelia and Hop Sage on this hike.
Continuing to hike east.
Looking back to the west as we continue to hike east... and we can actually see the summit of the pyramidal shaped Mt. Whitney on the horizon beyond the massive brown rocks and boulders in the foreground.
We have a nice view of our target out there in the middle of the photo.
I have reached the 4,690 foot summit as I watch Denali Girl work her way up to join me... looking out to the northern section of the Alabama Hills... with part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the left horizon.
From our high point we are looking north to part of the Alabama Hills on the left... and east to part of the Inyo Mountains on the middle and right horizon.
Denali Girl relaxes on our 4,690 foot summit... and we can see the pyramidal shaped Mt. Whitney on the far right horizon.
I have left our 4,690 foot summit while Denali Girl decided to stay for a little longer.
Heading west back to our car.
Almost back to our car... the hike was a one mile loop, gaining 112 feet of elevation.
