Tumalo Mountain - 5.9.2026
I parked at an elevation of 6,330 feet in the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park... located across the highway from the Sunrise Lodge entrance to Mount Bachelor... and that is Mount Bachelor on the horizon.
The Tumalo Mountain Trail #38 starts at the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park.
The trail doesn't waste any time in gaining elevation in a fairly dense forest.
Patchy snow starts fairly quickly from the trailhead.
After hiking .8 miles I got my first look at Mount Bachelor after gaining 600 feet of elevation.
At an elevation of 7,100 feet the forest opens up considerably.
Continuing to gain elevation on the Tumalo Mountain Trail... here looking back at Mount Bachelor from an elevation of 7,400 feet after hiking a total of 1.4 miles.
Continuing to gain elevation and getting closer to the summit of Tumalo Mountain.
I have reached an elevation of 7,640 feet... and the higher I get I see more of Mount Bachelor.
I have reached the summit area of Tumalo Mountain with the true summit up there on the right... in the distance on the left horizon I can see parts of South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top.
After hiking a total of 2 miles I have reached the summit of Tumalo Mountain at 7,775 feet... with Mount Bachelor on the extreme far left... and South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top on the right-center horizon.
A closer look at South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top from the summit of Tumalo Mountain.
A much closer look at South Sister (left), Middle Sister and Broken Top from the summit of Tumalo Mountain.
Getting ready to leave the summit area of Tumalo Mountain... and I will take a more direct route down... sort of heading directly toward Mount Bachelor.
Taking a more direct route back to the car provides a much longer view of South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top than I had on the trail leading up to the summit of Tumalo Mountain.
Off trail and heading down with an excellent view of Mount Bachelor from an elevation of 7,560 feet.
A pano from where I took the previous photo... showing Mount Bachelor on the far left... with South Sister, Middle Sister and Broken Top on the far right.
Back in the trees at an elevation of 7,100 feet.
I have come out of the trees and onto Swampy Dutchman Trail #40... and I will head south on it for a very short distance to get back to the parking lot.
I can see the parking lot out there in the middle of the photo... with the Tumalo Mountain Trail in the far left foreground... and Mount Bachelor on the far right horizon... the total hike was 3.6 miles, gaining 1,457 feet of elevation.
